John 1:1-5

Until John, we have been using older manuscripts of Ryle's Expository Thoughts. Just recently, though, EP Publishing has put out a lightly updated version of Ryle's work, which I am now working from. If you are interested in a physical copy of the Expository Thoughts, you can find it HERE.

John 1:1-5

  1. We learn that our Lord Jesus Christ is eternal.
  2. We learn that our Lord Jesus Christ is a Person distinct from God the Father and yet one with Him.
  3. We learn that the Lord Jesus Christ is truly God.
  4. We learn that the Lord Jesus Christ is the Creator of all things.
  5. We learn that the Lord Jesus Christ is the source of all spiritual life and light.

"If no one less than the Eternal God, the Creator and Preserver of all things, could take away the sin of the world, sin must be a far more abominable thing in the sight of God than most people suppose."

Questions:

  1. We sometimes look for truths that are practical, but nothing is more practical than knowing God who God has revealed Himself to be. As we hear these 5 glorious declarations of who Jesus is, do we know them to be true and delight in them?
  2. Ryle exhorts us to behold the sinfulness of sin as we consider that it took no one less than Jesus Himself to come for sinners. Does this resonate with us?
  3. Ryle also exhorts us to behold the true Christian's foundation for hope in these 5 glorious declarations of Jesus. Do we not find here a firm foundation for our feet?
